The „School of Copernicus Friends” program, organized by the Center for Copernican Studies at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń and Primary School No. 7 in Toruń, received dozens of birthday cards from all over Poland.

Making great strides towards the Congress

On February 19, the inauguration of the World Copernican Congress will take place, organized by the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, Jagiellonian University in Kraków, Warmia and Mazury University in Olsztyn, and the Institute of the History of Science of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

In this year, we commemorate the 550th anniversary of the birth and the 480th anniversary of the death of the outstanding Renaissance scholar, Nicolaus Copernicus. Therefore, the Senate of the Republic of Poland has declared 2023 the Year of this prominent astronomer, the creator of the heliocentric theory, in commemoration of these anniversaries.

The Year of Nicolaus Copernicus

By the decision of the Senate of the Republic of Poland dated November 16, 2022, the year 2023 was established as the Year of Nicolaus Copernicus. This date was linked to three anniversaries, namely the 550th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding astronomer and creator of the heliocentric theory, the 480th anniversary of his death, and the 480th anniversary of the publication of De revolutionibus orbium coelestium (first edition in Nuremberg 1543).
