Copernican bibliography

In this year, we commemorate the 550th anniversary of the birth and the 480th anniversary of the death of the outstanding Renaissance scholar, Nicolaus Copernicus. Therefore, the Senate of the Republic of Poland has declared 2023 the Year of this prominent astronomer, the creator of the heliocentric theory, in commemoration of these anniversaries.

This time will be celebrated throughout Poland with various scientific, cultural, and educational ceremonies, in cities closely connected to the biography of Nicolaus Copernicus, namely in Toruń, Kraków, and Olsztyn.

The University Library in Toruń has also actively participated in the celebrations. The Pomeranian Department of the University Library, consisting of Adam Biedrzycki, Jolanta Milz-Kłaczkow, and Wojciech Szramowski, is preparing the fourth volume of the Copernican Bibliography for the years 2002–2022, which will continue the previous three volumes published in 1958, 1973, and 2003 respectively. The fourth volume of the Copernican Bibliography will be published in 2023 by the Nicolaus Copernicus University Press. The promotion of this publication is planned for the September celebrations (September 12–15, 2023), which will take place in Toruń.

The principles of compiling the next volume are almost the same as those of the previous volumes. It will be an international bibliography with a formal-publishing scope, with slight changes to the bibliographic description, which will be adjusted to the collected literature reviewed and verified during a tedious and meticulous query. Most publications have been described based on personal examination, which helped in determining the appropriate classification and allocation to the appropriate chapter. The bibliography includes both national and foreign scientific publications (monographs, collective works, and articles in journals) as well as popular science and popular publications, although the huge number of the latter led to the decision to conduct appropriate selection among them. The selection of material is very broad and concerns not only biographical books about Copernicus but also the reception of his discovery theory, literature on research and researchers of Copernicus, and any other forms of honoring the memory of the great astronomer (movies, exhibitions, literature, symposia, conferences, etc.).
