The Year of Nicolaus Copernicus

By the decision of the Senate of the Republic of Poland dated November 16, 2022, the year 2023 was established as the Year of Nicolaus Copernicus. This date was linked to three anniversaries, namely the 550th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding astronomer and creator of the heliocentric theory, the 480th anniversary of his death, and the 480th anniversary of the publication of De revolutionibus orbium coelestium (first edition in Nuremberg 1543).

The jubilee celebrations will be held in Poland and around the world. These events will cement in the public consciousness the figure of Nicolaus Copernicus and his contributions to science, and will strengthen the contemporary efforts of the scientific and educational worlds to mark the subjective presence of Polish science in global social, economic, and political life, all in the context of the work of Nicolaus Copernicus, a Renaissance man whose discoveries influenced the shape of later astronomical sciences and inspired subsequent scholars to undertake increasingly complex questions and establish a true image of the universe. It was undoubtedly a breakthrough and one of the most important scientific revolutions since ancient times.

As part of the celebrations for the Year 2023, the Copernican World Congress will be held, the result of the combined efforts of many institutions, including the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, the Institute of the History of Science of the Polish Academy of Sciences, and the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun, as well as state, local, and church authorities. In total, there are dozens of scientific and cultural events planned to take place between February and September 2023 in Copernican cities, as well as many other accompanying events.
