Postage stamps with the image of Copernicus

Postage stamps with the image of Copernicus

In the 550th anniversary of the birth of Nicolaus Copernicus, many initiatives are being undertaken to pay tribute to the great astronomer. This figure continues to fascinate researchers, artists, and craftsmen alike.

Kopernik also appears in popular culture and collective memory. The astronomer is present not only in film, art, or comics, but also in everyday spaces such as street names, schools, or products, as well as on posters and postage stamps.

A collection dedicated to stamps with images of Nicolaus Copernicus was gathered by a philatelist from New Delhi, Jacquiline Roberts Singh, who amassed a collection of around 50 stamps dedicated to the astronomer. Ms. Singh has been collecting stamps since childhood, and her collection focuses on themes related to world leaders, birds, and famous women. For the past 2 years, she has also been collecting stamps related to Nicolaus Copernicus. She says:

I am fascinated by the variety of ways in which Nicolaus Copernicus has been depicted on stamps around the world. Each representation arouses curiosity to learn more about his life and work”.

Her first stamp with Nicolaus Copernicus dates back to 1973 and was issued by India Post to commemorate the 500th anniversary of his birth. Thanks to her kindness, the most valuable collections can be admired on the following sheet.
